As part of our Observant Masonry series, we are delighted to have Shawn Eyer, esteemed Masonic Scholar, presenting "The Earthly and Celestial Temple" as part or our monthly series and the seventh step offered by WB Andrew Hammer in "Eight Steps to Excellence: The Observant Lodge." The theme for the month is "The Return of a Sense of Awe to Our Ceremonies," and Brother Eyer will discuss how our lodge can and should represent King Solomon's temple.
Shawn Eyer is a scholar researching the history, ritual, iconography, symbolism, and philosophy of Craft Freemasonry, and has lectured widely at both academic conferences and Masonic symposia. He holds advanced degrees in psychology and religion as well as business. Bro. Eyer has authored dozens of articles on Masonry, and is the editor of Philalethes, North America's oldest independent Masonic education journal. Professionally, he is the Managing Director of Communications and Education of the George Washington Masonic National Memorial in Alexandria, Virginia. He is a Past Master of Academia Lodge No. 847, California's first lodge of Traditional Observance. A Lodge of Qualification is a solemn assembly within Freemasonry—convened not for routine labor, but for the preservation of the Craft’s spiritual lineage. It is a ritual tribunal, formed to collectively discern whether a Brother stands ready to assume the Oriental Chair.
This is no mere formality. It is a sacred pause in time, where an assembly of Master Masons gather to test the alignment of one man’s inner light with the timeless rhythm of Masonic wisdom. It is here, in this hallowed space, that a Master Mason's history is reviewed, his qualifications examined, and his position is affirmed as the head of his Lodge of Freemasons.
The Lodge of Qualification stands as a guardian of continuity, ensuring that the chain of spiritual succession is unbroken. It is a reminder that in Freemasonry, authority is never assumed—it is conferred by merit, consecrated through understanding, and sealed in the collective assent.
